BET will air a special tribute in honor of the late DMX at the 2021 BET Awards. The tribute will be handled by Swizz Beatz and will include performances from Busta Rhymes, Griselda, and Method Man.
“We look forward to celebrating DMX’s indelible mark in music and pop culture. DMX inspired fans around the world with his signature raspy voice, the delivery of raw emotion through his lyrics and performances, and his giving spirit. We are proud to pay our respects to a Hip-Hop legend on our biggest stage, the BET Awards,” said Connie Orlando, Executive Vice President of Specials, Music Programming & Music Strategy.
With choreographer Fatima Robinson serving as creative director, the tribute will feature some of DMX’s biggest hits including “Slippin,” “Party Up,” “What’s My Name?” “Where the Hood At?” “My Nigga / X Gon’ Give It to Ya,” “Get at Me Dog,” “Ruff Ryders Anthem,” and “DMX Prayer.”
DMX, born Earl Simmons died Friday, April 9 at White Plains hospital, New York after suffering from drug overdose. His family released a statement announcing his passing at just 50 years old.
“We are deeply saddened to announce today that our loved one, DMX, Birth name of Earl Simmons, passed away at 50-years-old at White Plains Hospital with his Family by his side after being placed on life support for the past few days.”
“Earl was a warrior who fought till the very end. He loved his family with all of his heart and we cherish the times we spent with him. Earl’s music inspired countless fans across the world and his iconic legacy will live on forever.”
The late rapper’s first posthumous album Exodus (named after his youngest son) was released on May 28, with guest appearances from Nas, Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, Lil Wayne, The Lox, Griselda, Alicia Keys and more.
The BET Awards will air on Sunday, June 27 at 8 p.m. on BET.
