J. Cole returns with a new surprise single that touches on the current state of affairs in America. On the song Cole raps about a woman who he presumes to be smarter than him.
“Niggas be thinking I’m deep/intelligent fooled by college degree/My IQ is average/There’s a young lady out there she way smarter than me/I scrolled through her timeline in these wild times and I started to read/She mad at these crackers, she mad at these capitalists, mad at these murder police,” he raps in part. “She mad my niggas, she mad at our ignorance, she wear her heart on her sleeve/She mad at the celebrities, low key I’m assuming she talking bout me.”
The track is reportedly a response to Noname’s controversial tweets, in which she called out her peers for remaining silent despite the state of unrest in the country.
“Poor black folks all over the country are putting their bodies on the line in protest for our collective safety and y’all favorite top selling rappers not even willing to put a tweet up,” she said in the since-deleted tweet. “niggas whole discographies be about black plight and they no where to be found.”
“How you gon’ lead, when you attacking the very same niggas that really do need the shit that you saying?” Cole asks. “Instead of conveying you holier, come help get us up to speed … Fuck is the point of you preaching your message to those that already believe what you believe?”
