Two new seasons of the Boondocks are coming to HBO Max.
Aaron McGruder’s hit animated series “The Boondocks” will make its long awaited return with 24 new episodes next fall on WarnerMedia’s streaming service.
“The Boondocks was a revolutionary series that sparked conversations on hot button issues and brought dark subjects into the light with episodes like ‘The Trial of Robert Kelly,’ ‘The Fundraiser’ and ‘The Story of Gangstalicious,’” said Kevin Reilly, chief content officer for HBO Max and president of TBS, TNT and TruTV. “Aaron is a gifted visionary whose unique style of storytelling is a welcome voice, and we are elated the Freemans are making their thugnificent comeback on HBO Max.”
All 55 episodes from the show’s original television run on Adult Swim
will also be available on the new streaming service, which arrives next spring.
Aaron McGruder, who wasn’t involved in the show’s fourth and final season will be reprising his role as showrunner and executive producer along with Norm Aladjem, Seung Kim and Meghann Collins Robertson.
“There’s a unique opportunity to revisit the world of The Boondocks and do it over again for today,” saidsaid Aaron McGruder. “It’s crazy how different the times we live in are now – both politically and culturally – more than a decade past the original series and two decades past the original newspaper comic. There’s a lot to say and it should be fun.”
The upcoming reboot “chronicles the battles of the Freeman family against the evil local government tyrant Uncle Ruckus, who rules fictional Woodcrest County Maryland, with an iron fist.”
Sony Pictures Animation will produce the series in partnership with Sony Pictures Television.
